The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) is a not-for-profit association representing more than 5,000 family medicine educators. Dedicated to improving the health of all people through education, research, patient care, and advocacy, STFM sponsors several meetings each year. These meetings offer great networking and educational opportunities for those involved in family medicine education.

The Bayer Institute for Health Care Communication is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of health care by improving communication between clinician and patient through three activities: education, research and advocacy. Readers of The Healthcare Collaborator may be especially interested in the Institute's outstanding interactive communications workshops for clinicians and other members of the health care team. With more than 500 faculty members, the Institute has trained more than 60,000 clinicians to improve health outcomes through better communication skills. The Institute frequently presents its programs to medical schools, residency programs, managed care organizations, hospitals, government healthcare systems, insurance carriers and group practices. Workshop topics include:

National Center
for Cultural Competence (NCCC)

The mission of the National Center of Cultural Competence (NCCC) is to increase the capacity of health care and mental health programs to design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically competent service delivery systems. The NCCC conducts an array of activities to fulfill its mission including: (1) training, technical assistance, and consultation; (2) networking, linkages, and information exchange; and (3) knowledge and product development and dissemination. Major emphasis is placed on policy development, assistance in conducting cultural competence organizational self-assessments, and strategic approaches to the systematic incorporation of culturally competent values, policy, structures, and practices within organizations.

The mission of the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) is to improve the health of rural Americans and provide leadership on rural health issues through advocacy, communications, education and research. As a multifaceted national membership association, the NRHA provides leadership on rural health issues, creates a clearer understanding of rural health needs, and serves as a forum for the exchange and dissemination of ideas, information, research and methods to improve rural health.

The NRHA membership is a diverse collection of individuals and organizations, all of whom share the common bond of an interest in rural health. Individual members come from all disciplines and include administrators, physicians, nurses, dentists, non-physician providers, health planners, researchers, educators and policy-makers. Organization and supporting members include hospitals, community and migrant health centers, state health departments, state offices of rural health, affiliated state rural health associations and university programs. Recently, the NRHA expanded its ranks with a new membership category that includes rural community residents not employed in the health care field.
